Blake Griffin: “Why Did I Have To Be Half-White?”

The below video originally aired shortly after Blake Griffin was named the first pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, but it resurfaced last night during TNT’s Inside the NBA and it’s hilarious so I decided to share it.

The video is entitled “Blake Griffin: Narrow World of Sports” and is an interview with Blake Griffin, conducted by Peter Mehlman—a Seinfeld producer and writer. During the interview Mehlman welcomes Griffin to Los Angeles, and warns him of what he should expect from the plastic-loving city.

The interview is quite funny with Mehlman and Griffin feeding off one another as they poke fun on several topics.

Here are some of the more funny lines from the interview:

Mehlman: You always wanted to play in the NBA. Were you ever at all worried that the white part in you would hold you back?
Griffin: Sometimes. At night when I would go to bed I would cry myself to sleep, because it’s like why did I have to be half-white, why couldn’t I just be guaranteed to be in the NBA.

Mehlman: Everyone comes to LA to get rich and famous, and you skipped those steps. That was really smart.
Griffin: Yea. Who wants to work hard and all that.
Mehlman: So overrated.
Griffin: So overrated. Right up there with humility.
