Portsmouth Invitational: Game 9

In what essentially was a match-up of the two “worst” teams in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, Portsmouth Sports Club knocked off Cherry, Bakaert and Holland by 11 in the first game of a long day in Virginia.

Again, Edwin Ubiles paced Portsmouth Sports Club, logging 19 points, six rebounds, and six assists in 32 minutes.  We’ve talked extensively about Ubiles this week, but the synopsis is worth repeating.  He’s got perfect length for an NBA small forward, is athletic enough to play in the league, and can score in a variety of ways.  He’s an intriguing prospect in the second round who could move up based on individual workouts.

Stephen Dennis, from Division II Kutztown (PA), had his first solid game of the tournament.  He’s got great length for a shooting guard and was one of the best scorers in Division II.  He struggled shooting the ball this weekend, but his form is consistent and he should secure enough workouts to get a look.  We don’t expect him to be drafted, but he’s an intriguing player for the D-League.

Jordan Eglseder continued to show what a big man can due when a ton of shots are going up.  He scored 14 points on seven of 11 shooting and pulled in 13 rebounds in just 22 minutes.  He’s a big body whose game is better suited for international play.

For the losing team the story was once again DeShawn Sims.  The power forward out of Michigan scored 21 points and hauled in seven rebounds.  The week was great for Sims as he showed his ability to score in the post and facing the basket.  We are higher on him than others, and think he should be drafted in the late second round, and may even go ahead of his former Wolverine teammate Manny Harris.

Denis Clemente didn’t shoot the ball particularly well this week, but showed he doesn’t need to be knocking down the three to be effective.  On the game he scored just ten points, but handed out 13 assists while only having one turnover.  The ability to do more than hit the open shot probably made him more desirable in the eyes of the many international GMs and scouts in attendance.
