Portsmouth Invitational: Game 2

In the second game of the night Portsmouth Sports Club got spanked by K&D Rounds Landscaping 90-56.  Coming into the tournament we thought DeShawn Sims would be one of the best players there, and he didn’t disappoint in his first game.  He scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Unfortunately, the only other bright spot for Sports Club was Tory Jackson, the undersized guard from Notre Dame who showed his ability to score from outside, going three for three from behind the arc.  Jackson will likely end up overseas, but could go the D-League route and be called up for a team that requires a high IQ point guard, like the Jazz did with Sundiata Gaines.

For the victors the scoring was spread out.  The surprise of the game was the silence from Ryan Wittman out of Cornell.  He shot three of nine, missing all four of his three point attempts.  He finished the game with only six points, but did manage to grab seven rebounds.

There was little doubt one of the guards would go off for K&D Rounds, but some would be surprised it was Donald Sloan of Texas A&M.  He went for 20 points on 8 of 12 shooting.  Sloan is an undersized shooting guard, who needs to continue scoring at a high level in order to get any NBA looks.

Less surprising was the performance of Rodney Green from LaSalle who came into the season with some NBA buzz, but failed to carry it through the season.  He showed why he was considered NBA potential with his 16 points on 6 of 13 shooting, getting to the rim and converting four of five free throws.

Trevon Hughes put in a well balanced effort running the point most of the night, finishing the game with 12 points, five assists, and six rebounds.  The pace of play was certainly quicker than he was use to at Wisconsin, but he seemed to adapt very well.

North Carolina big Deon Thompson played well getting the double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Scouts have seen plenty of Thompson in his years at UNC and its hard to believe that anything can get him on NBA draft boards.
